Club News - April 27 2008

Sea Otter Classic News

Three members of the club are competing this year at the Sea Otter Classic near Monterey.  Unlike past years the weather is dry, with a chill wind but otherwise comfortable conditions.

Jim "Last Minute" Brown achieved a podium finish with a 4th place result in Hardtail Downhill (on a bike with no front brakes and a front derailler stuck in the big gear).  On Sunday Jim competed again in the regular Downhill competition in the Expert class, placing 20th.

Also in Downhill, Tom Judy ranked 24th in a crowded class of Sport Men 40-49.  Tom told me he would naturally have liked to place better but was happy to be able to compete at the sport level and enjoyed being at the event.

Finally, young Emilie Brown raced her first cross country event on her pink tricycle complete with basket and bell.  Unfortunately, after a slow start Emilie and another rider collided which further slowed her progress along the course.  She persevered though with a little help from mom.  Emilie finished in last place but she never gave up.  Good job, Em!

CCC Wish List

At a recent meeting Rich asked us to go around the table and present some ideas for a "wish list" for the club.  The wish list is not limited to objects. It can also contain activities and ideas.  By presenting this list we hope to encourage people who may see something they have, or something they would like to do to step forward and provide their help.

Our wishes list is not limited to what you see here. Anybody who wants to add something can call me, John at 530-885-8661 or email me at the address at the bottom of the page.  The more ideas the better.  We'd like the synergy to build!

This year and past two years results on racing page.

Community outreach projects
Saturday April 5 was the final work day for our RecycleBike project in its original form.  We had excellent help from the crew at Greenwood California Conservation Corp in refurbishing most of our remaining inventory.  The Bicycle Kitchen from Sacramento came up and removed everything else.
This begins a new phase of of RecycleBike.  We found that though the original intent was to fix up bicycles for needy children, most of the inventory we received were adult bikes, and many of those were not geared properly for the foothills conditions.  We will still take donations, and will continue to work with organizations such as the California Conservation Corps and Bicycle Kitchen.  In the meantime, we are exploring new methods of meeting the needs of local children without bikes.
Thanks to all who helped along the way!
The date for our May Adopt a Highway pickup is scheduled for May 31.  Normally we schedule this toward the middle of the month but May is an extremely busy month for us.  Meet at 8:30 AM at Sierra Mtn Espresso.  Bring sturdy shoes, long pants.  Call John at 885-8661 for more info.

Cool Cycling Club Constitution has been ratified and is now available here.
